Photographers protest against permits
6 September 2010
gm photographics joined hundreds of other photographers in Sydney to protest against permits required to
take photographs of iconic landmarks in our cities. Photographers are outraged at these permits, which will make it extremely expensive and hard for commercial photographers to photograph iconic Australian landmarks.
Landscape photographer Peter Walton (photographed above) dressed up for the protest, along with many other passionate photographers, who turned up to Campbells Cove in Sydney to protest and show their support against these permits.
The Sydney Morning Herald spoke to Graham Monro.
Wedding and portrait photographer Graham Monro said the permit fees were unfair, given many photographers pursued their craft for love, rather than money.
“Many (photographers) are no where near as affluent or well paid as many people believe,” he said.
“Many lose money … there are so many expenses, including travel expenses, accommodation and the cost of permits.
“When you take all that into account, it’s questionable whether they make any money at all.”

Red Nose Day article as seen in this week’s Mosman Daily
2 July 2010
Mosman photographer Graham Monro on the set of the shoot for the Red Nose Day advertising campaign, with one of his images. Red ribbons tied on round bellies feature in an advertising campaign shot by Mosman photographer Graham Monro. The red ribbons match red noses for Red Nose Day, which will be held to raise money for the SIDS and Kids organisation which provides education and funds research into infant death, as well as supporting bereaved parents. Monro, who is the father of twins, shot the campaign featuring three pregnant women who have previously suffered the devastating loss of a baby. It was Monro’s idea to tie the red ribbons around their ‘‘baby bumps’’. ‘‘It’s to do with the present of life that is pregnancy,’’ Monro said. A SIDS and Kids spokesman said Monro did ‘‘a fantastic job’’ creating images to promote Red Nose Day. Monro, who has shot advertising campaigns for clients such as Qantas and Telstra, said he was happy to oblige when SIDS and Kids approached him. ‘‘The campaign was very satisfying as they are doing such a wonderful job and have had an 85 per cent reduction in SIDS deaths since they started the Red Nose days. They are absolutely amazing results.’’
Red Nose Day provides SIDS and Kids with funding for a 24-hour bereavement support line, community education and for research into the cause of infant death and unexplained stillbirth. Merchandise is available at various retail stores, including Priceline at Spit Junction.
